Parkway closed between E. Jefferson St. and old Old Georgetown Rd.

The forested property to the east of the Getty gas station on Montrose Road is owned by Wilgus Associates. Wilgus Assoc. received permits years ago to build two office buildings between the Getty station and old Old Georgetown Road. This year, Wilgus held an informational meeting about its new plans for the site. Guess where they put the public notice??? This sign is facing the CLOSED SECTION of Montrose Parkway...no traffic, no one passes by. As you can see, the meeting was last month. Traveling east toward East Jefferson Street on the closed parkway, there is a sign pointing to Stonehenge Place, as street that parallels the parkway, but doesn't intersect with it. This will be the entrance to Stonehenge Place. Even though the parkway was not supposed to be a local road and was to have smooth-flowing traffic through North Bethesda, the Wilgus property owners were able to get this curb cut approved with their development. It will lead to the back of the Cherington townhouses, the back of the Getty station, and branch to feed the new Wilgus buildings. Another view of the future Stonehenge Place access point from the Montrose "Parkway." Note that the median accomodates turns across the future traffic. Of course, this section of the parkway is not open. The contractor told me that, although it is completed, it will not be opened until Phase II (the intersection tunnel under Rockville Pike) is built.

  1. Any additional info since the planning board meeting last July? Last I heard was that they needed to file a site plan by November 2009, and that issues regarding the access road to Montrose Parkway were holding this up...

  2. I don't know about the site plan. There was an old site plan that showed the access from the back of the Getty station; it would tie to both Cherington and to the new Wilgus buildings, but that plan expired and has probably been altered in some fashion. My understanding of the reason that section of the parkway isn't open is that Old Old Georgetown Road is being widened and altered (I believe they are planning to open it to Old Georgetown at Executive Blvd.) and the parkway, as currently constructed, can't dump out behind Mid-Pike Plaza. Someone at the county level had told me that they wouldn't open that section until the underpass was complete and opened so that there wouldn't be such a backup.

  3. You are absolutely correct Emily - I also heard that this section won't be opened until the underpass at Rockville Pike is complete, so the traffic can continue onto Randolph Rd.

The office building proposed by Wilgus Assocites will be huge - at 300,000+ sq ft. plus parking for roughly 900 cars! If anyone hears anything about its progress, please let us know. I'm curious as to what this will turn out!

  4. Anyone know what is going on with this site plan by Wilgus Associates? Any idea on when it will be built?

  5. Any idea on when Stonehenge Place (or Cherington Dr. as I think it now to be called), will be built? I'm concerned of cut through traffic between Montrose Rd & Montrose Parkway.

Also, any word on when or if the property between the townhouses and Hoya, Montrose Rd & Montrose Parkway will be developed? Signs are posted around the property about a 308,000 square foot office building proposed for the site?

  6. I haven't heard anything about further projects for the Wilgus tract (the woods to the east of the Getty station) for several years. Well before the parkway funding was approved, Wilgus Associates got a site plan approved by the Planning Board for 2 (if I recall correctly) office buildings. The project would have access to the parkway that went behind the Getty, and it would also connect into Cherington. Since then, I don't know what happened. They never built the office buildings, and so much time has gone by that they will probably have to reapply for a new site plan approval. That may be what's going on now. I'll check the Planning Dept. site to see if there is a new application pending.
